Ship Fabrication: Electrical and Automation Grounding and Harmonics 1 Learning Objective ● This module is intended to enhance the awareness of the participant with ship fabrication issues pertinent to grounding and harmonics 2 1 Grounding of Cable Armor: DC vs AC ● Motors are cheaper and more robust ● Transformers are convenient and efficient ● One feature of an alternating current is the alternating electromagnetic field, this induces a voltage and where there is a conductor to take advantage of that voltage difference then a current flows ● Usually this is to our advantage ● It is the magnetic coupling between the primary coil of a transformer and secondary that induces the secondary current and it is the induced current that flows in the rotor of a squirrel cage induction motor that permits construction without brushes to help increase their reliability 3 Disadvantages ● When that field appears where we don’t want it ● The full current that goes to transformers and motors has to get there through cables first ● As the field reverses in the cable 120 times a second it radiates a field ● The resulting field leaves the cable and can become a nuisance ● Sometimes overheating, particularly with single core cables ● Sometimes cross talk between communications cables ● It can interfere with indications, alarms and control 4 2 Grounding (Earthing) ● Electrical distribution system grounding (dirty earth) ● Personn
