Moral Character Education and Reader’s Theater Gina Mandell California Lutheran University A Capstone Action Research Project In fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Education Degree May 2006 ABSTRACT Historically, moral character education and academics have been combined when teaching. In today’s world of education, how do educators teach morals that help students connect words with actions, while maintaining the requirements to teach standards based curriculum? This research examined how reader’s theater affected moral character education and determined whether implementing reader’s theater enhanced students’ understanding of a moral character trait. The research was conducted at Lang Ranch Elementary School with four, second grade students. Data was collected using pre and posttest questionnaires and included structured pre and posttest interviews of participants. The results provided evidence that reader’s theater was instrumental in helping students connect the meaning between the moral character trait, perseverance, and the actions of story characters. Acknowledgements Various accomplishments are made possible through dedication, diligence, and sacrifice.
