A Guide to Rhetorical Devices 1.Expletives（附加语/语助词） An expletive is a word or short phrase that we use to lend emphasis to words on either side of it. eg. There is an analogy between the way water moves in waves and the way light travels. 3)Metaphor (暗喻/隐喻） It is like a simile, also makes a comparison between two unlike elements, but unlike a simile, this comparison is implied rather than stated.
