A Guide to Rhetorical Devices 1.Expletives(附加语/语助词) An expletive is a word or short phrase that we use to lend emphasis to words on either side of it. eg. What we find, then, is that the new tax law is funda-mentally unjust. In brief, you should be more careful. 2.Simile,Analogies and Metaphors 1)simile(明喻) A simile involves comparing two things that share a resemblance in at least one way--usually in vividly descriptive terms. eg. as long as it’s broad as clear as crystal Childhood is like a swiftly passing dream. 2)Analogy(类比) Analogy draws a parallel between two unlike things that have several common qualities or points of resemblance. eg. There is an analogy between the way water moves in waves and the way light travels. 3)Metaphor (暗喻/隐喻) It is like a simile, also makes a comparison between two unlike elements, but unlike a simile, this comparison is implied rather than stated. He has a heart of stone. All the worlds a stage (Shakespeare) In a Station of the Metro By Ezra Pound The apparition of faces in the crowd, Petals on a wet, black bough. 3.Hyperbole (夸张) It is the deliberate use of overstatement or exaggeration to achieve emphasis. eg. Its torrent dashes down three thousand feet from high, I wonder if its Milky Way that falls from the sky. 4.Understatement (含蓄陈述) It is the opposite of hyperbole, or overstatement. It achieves its effect of emphasizing a fact by deliberately understating it, impressing the listener or the reader more by what is merely implied or left unsaid than by bare statement. eg. Your analysis is far too simplistic. I think there may be some additional factors that you may not have accounted for 5.Litotes (曲言法/间接肯定法) A litotes is an understatement formed by the denial of an opposite. This sounds confusing but is actually quite straightforwa
