There are a number of issues associated with this; Smoke may be impeded from reaching traditional detectors due to random airflow. It may be difficult or impossible to locate detectors in areas of random airflow, due to impedence by stock, racking or other obstructions. It will become expensive to locate point detectors in all the areas necessary to avoid the effects of random airflow. The VESDA air sampling smoke detection system uses cumulative sampling to increase sensitivity. A point detector measures smoke at a single point in space. If there is not enough smoke at that point, the detector alarm will not go off. Each VESDA detector samples over a network of sampling points. Each point contributes to the smoke being measured at the detector, allowing much earlier detection.
