Chinese Natural Gas (NG) brief report Date: March 2009 By River Zhong riverzhong@ Definitions Commonly, from the angle of energy, natural gas includes gas which is extracted from oil fields, gas fields, cold bed (CBM) and coal mine (CMM) etc, as well as is produced from bio-degradation (biogas) and synthetic (syngas). Coal mine methane (CMM) is methane released from coal seams during coal mining. CBM is methane trapped within coal seams that have not, or will not, be mined. But, restrictedly, we define gas, in which methane content is about 85-98%, and which is extracted from oil fields, gas fields and cold bed, as natural gas. Main content 1. Chinese NG resources 2. Chinese NG resources Overview China’s NG reserves is 47 trillion m3 and this kind of resources mainly distribute in Sichuan Basin, ShaanGanNing gas fields area, Tarim Basin and Qinghai, South China Sea and East China Sea. The government of China targets NG consumption to account for 10% of the total national energy consumption by 2020. To achieve this, China shall increase its NG production and enhance the international partnership of energy cooperation to maintain the NG transnational imports lines, including pipelines from Russia and countries in central Asia, and LNG shipping by sea. Summary The total NG resources reserves is rich in China, but the gap between supply and actual demand will expand. According to expertise, Chinese NG industry could keep developing for about 20 year in the future.
