Module 1 Our Body and Healthy Habits
Whenever Gu Yiwen goes to the university canteen or a restaurant,the 23-year-old Nanjing University translation student brings two tools with her—a pen and a memo.She writes down the ingredients (成分)of all the food shes consumed in order to later record them in iCalorie,a smart phone application that keeps track of the calories she has absorbed.Science and technology have helped her maintain(保持)a healthy diet.
“It wasnt easy in the beginning,but to maintain healthy eating habits,scientific measurements are needed,”she said.
Gu wasnt so healthy a few years ago.Before she entered college,she admitted enjoying chips and sugary drinks to reduce the stress of her studies.Shed have several midnight snacks if she stayed up late.But that only made her teeth bad and resulted in low blood pressure.
“That experience forced me to pay attention to my diet and pursue healthier alternatives,”she said.
However,maintaining a healthy diet was more complicated than she had expected.“A proper diet doesnt just mean eating less,it also means consuming foods with a variety of nutrients,”she said.
Now she compares the nutrients in different foods,helping her stick to a diet of high-protein meats,vegetables,and fruits of different colors.
“Theres science behind the diet.The color of a food can reflect the nutrients it contains.Leafy greens,for example,are rich in folic acid,and red fruits pack in more iron,”she said.“In order to take in as many different color fruits as I can in one day,I use a hand-operated device in my dormitory to blend(混合)fruits and vegetables into juice.”
