* * * * Cloud computing is a term that was introduced to cover a multitude of existing practices adopted within the IT industry. As a concept it helps to formalise and document existing strategies and best practices within the ICT industry. In reality ‘Cloud’ is a euphemism for a ‘Black Box’ and is intended as an abstraction to simplify underlying complexity. Whereas a Black Box is a tangible physical device in the here-now, the Cloud is something out-there with a larger geographic connotation. It is quite often to hear “What’s new”, “So what”, or “How is this different from what we were doing before”. As stated, Cloud is an extension of existing practices under a renewed conceptual paradigm. IT Services has provided shared computing infrastructure with offsite batch processing for many years, especially when computing was an expensive resource which could be shared between multiple clients. The rise of the desktop PC and lower cost computing infrastructure, relative to the cost of network transmission, shifted the balance of investment towards customer premise based data processing solutions. With the advent of the Internet and increased desire to access information everywhere, the cost of network transmission capacity has been reduced whilst the cost of data centres has increased - driven by personnel and environmental costs. This has shifted the balance back away from premises based solutions to a shared infrastructure. Many parts of Cloud technologies and arguments will be familiar, whilst some new components will be required to fulfil the Cloud vision. As a starting point many people point at the US NIST definition as a reasonable definition for Cloud Computing. This provides five characteristics, three service models and four deployment models.
