Its architacture brings us a special feeling. It says that the old merchants were travelling many west countries. They put many oyster shells into themerchant ship for balancing at first. After the trip, they threw the shells to the haven. The ancestors collected them to build the house. So the wastes becomes treasure and the oyster shell house was born. Special Building in Minnan 闽南特色建筑 STRUCTURE The general structure of house is just like the folk house in Quanzhou. However its thickness is 36cm, the commen house is just 12~24cm. The shells are generally built in the exterior walls around the house piece by piece with lime, sand and soil. And the spalls are used to make the interior walls. With the combination of outside and inside, the house becomes especially strong. The house will warm in winter and cool in summer because the big and hollow shells can isolate the air.
