ContentChapter1IntroductionTheSignificanceandPurpose oftheThesisInrecentyears,pragmaticshasmadegreatprogressandoccupiesimportantstatusinlinguistics.Linguistshasmadealotofstudyonpragmaticphenomenonandestablisheddifferenttheories,especiallyforcommunication.In1967,GriceproposedthecooperativeprincipleinLogicandConversation,whichprovidesasetofmaximsforpeopletoobeyinconversations.Histheoryis referentialandconstructive.However,intheactuallife,peopleoftenviolatethecooperativeprinciple.Soconversationalimplicatureisproduced.Inotherwords,whatpeoplereallymeanisnotwhattheysay.Inthisaspect,Grice’stheoryishelpfulto“explainhowahearergetsfromwhatissaidtowhatismeant,from thelevel ofexpressedmeaningtothelevel ofimpliedmeaning”(Thomas,1995:56).Butitstillcannotexplainwhypeopleviolatethemaximsofthecooperativeprinciple.Itisnotalongtimethatlinguistsfinditout---politeness.Leechfirstformulateshispoliteness theorytorescueGrice’scooperativeprincipleandexplainconversationalimplicature.AfterhimBrownandLevinsonputforwardtheirpolitenesstheory.Theythinkpeoplehavepositivefaceandnegativeface,whichmaybesaved,damagedorenhancedinconversations.Sometimesfortheirorothers’face,theywillviolatethecooperativeprinciple.What’smore,theymayalsoadoptsome“face-threateningacts”.The politeness theoriesofLeech,BrownandLevinsonpromotepragmaticsinto anewlevelandmakeupthedisadvantageofGrice’scooperativeprinciple.Thisthesis,adoptingGrice’scooperativeprinciple,Leech’spolitenessprincipleandBrownandLevinson’sfacetheory,takestheconversationsinPrideandPrejudiceforexampletoanalyzeconversationsinEnglish,aimingto specificallyexplainwhypeopleviolatethecooperativeprincipleandshowhowpeopleusepolitenessandfaceideaintheirutterances.Itwillhelptheresearcherandhearertounderstandothers’ conversationalimplicatureincommunicationwhentheyviolatethecooperativeprincipleandknowhowtobehaveinconversationwell.ResearchMethodologyPrideandPrejudice,aworld famousbookwrittenbyJane Austen,isaverywonderfulstory.Therearemanycharactersandconversationsinth
