Donne 英国文学作品选读课件方案策划.ppt
John Donne
John Donne
Donne is famous for writing in at least two genres of poetry: erotic love poetry, like To His Mistress Going to Bed and The Flea, and devotional (religious) poetry, like the famous Holy Sonnets.
There is not always a strict line between religion and eroticism in Donnes poetry, and in the seventeenth century you could be a preacher and still take a passionate interest in sex.
Donne, we should add, was a well-known preacher who converted from Catholicism to Protestantism.
Metaphysical poet
Metaphysics: 形而上学==形而下学
metaphysical poets: 玄学派
a term coined by the poet and critic Samuel Johnson to describe a loose group of British lyric poets of the 17th century, whose work was characterized by the inventive use of conceits, and by speculation about topics such as love or religion.
These poets were not formally affiliated; most of them did not even know or read each other.
Main Metaphysical poets
John Donne (1572–1631)
George Herbert (1593–1633)
Andrew Marvell (1621–1678)
Abraham Cowley (1618–1667)
Saint Robert Southwell (c. 1561–1595)
Richard Crashaw (c. 1613–1649)
Thomas Traherne (1636 or 1637 – 1674)
Henry Vaughan (1622–1695)
Conceit
an extended metaphor with a complex logic that governs a poetic passage or entire poem. By juxtaposing, usurping and manipulating images and ideas in surprising ways, a conceit invites the reader into a more sophisticated understanding of an object of comparison.
In the Renaissance, the term (which is related to the word concept) indicated any particularly fanciful expression of wit.
The Flea
What is the main image of this poem?
The Flea was written in an age when people were not such squeamish germophobes as they are now.
Fleas were a not-infrequent subject of seventeenth-century European painting.
The image of a flea sucking blood would not have automatically led a Renaissance audience to recoil in horror.
Form of the poem
This poem alternates metrically between lines in iambic tetrameter and lines
