American people were proud of their American dreams and American mysteries from one generation to another generation, therefore there were a large number of works in American literature’s history describing American Dream. F. Scott. Fitzgerald is famous American writer of The Lost Generation who is also the spokesman of “Jazz Age’’. His masterpiece, The Great Gatsby, fully revealed the realization and the collapse of American Dream in 1920s. There are several reasons to explain the collapse of American Dream: with the unprecedented economical prosperity after WWI, influenced by the American Dream, numerous people swarmed into the urbanarea. The various stages of society are running for money and achieving their purposes by different ways, many American people stuck into confused, helpless, idle, confused mental state. The over fanatics of materialism was vibrating the root of traditional concept of American Dream, Therefore, the pursuit of ultra-high enjoyment of the material, corruption of individual moral and social reasons such as World WarI throwing the young men into an age of alienation , dissentient economic bloom affecting the promising men and corruption of social moral ,eventually led to Gatsby’s dreams and the sacred American Dream in every American heart shattered.This paper would briefly analyze the development American dream, on this basis, people would perceive the theme of the American dream in the major works of Fitzgerald, moreover, it also would analyze the root which causes the American dream shattered.Key words: American Dream; Gay Gatsby; collapse; rootAcknowledgementsThe completion of this thesis is due to the contribution and efforts of severalpeople to whom I owe a
