As one of the greatest book in American literary history，Moby Dick is widely regarded as the summit of American nineteenth-century fictions with heart-shaking whaling experience. Moby-Dick contains plenty of symbolism. Such as the white whale Moby Dick stand for the mysterious and magical spirits heresy, and all the evil. The Captain Ahab enrich the symbolism of whaling. It represents the world stage of human life; a symbol of perseverance to seek the secret nature of the American spirit. And the Pequod’s crew members represent all races and various religious, suggesting the idea of America as a universal state of mind as well as a melting pot. Understanding the symbolic meanings of the characters and subjects in the novel is important.
