PART1 One of the most important electronic test and measuring instruments is the oscilloscope. It is widely used in design work, trouble-shooting and signal monitoring, manufacturing and production-line testing, and many other applications where the observation of an electrical waveform is desired. Oscilloscopes range from the basic, or general-purpose types, to the special-purpose types .The general purpose oscilloscope is suitable for any of the usual applications in servicing communications, scientific, or industrial work where the frequency of the signal to be observed does not greatly exceed 500 kHz. Fig.8-1 is a simple block diagram that shows how an analog oscilloscope displays a measured signal. When you connect an oscilloscope probe to a circuit, the voltage signal travels through the probe to the vertical system of the oscilloscope. Voltage applied to these deflection plates causes a glowing dot to move. (An electron beam hitting phosphor inside the CRT creates the glowing dot.) A positive voltage causes the dot to move up while a negative voltage causes the dot to move down. Depending on how you set the vertical scale (volts/div control), an attenuator reduces the signal voltage or an amplifier increases the signal voltage.
