Employee healthy benefits Employee wellness has been a popular catch-phrase in businesses for many years, and with the spiraling costs of health-care benefits, savvy employers are adopting new programs to encourage employees to take better care of themselves. Many businesses recognize that offering wellness programs is a long-term strategy that will pay dividends of lower employee absenteeism, increased productivity and reduced health-care expenses. Although its important to educate and support employees with major health concerns, employers should consider the importance of keeping the other 80 percent of employees healthy. In the long run, employers will offer incredible value to these employees and save themselves substantial health-care expenses. Research indicates that when employers improve their employees health they, in turn, enhance the performance of their businesses. Wellness programs for employers of all sizes Small and large businesses alike can offer employee wellness programs. The value of wellness programs is not just in providing employees the newest and best in fitness equipment, but in offering programs and services that encourage employees to make the commitment to improving their health. According to the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions, employers should consider offering a wide spectrum of programs, such as: a. health screening services (including assessments, flu shots, cholesterol or blood tests) b. smoking cessation programs c. subsidized gym programs or an on-site workout facility d. allocation of time for employees to exercise during the work day e. healthy foods on company cafeteria menus f. lunch-and-learn programs on healthy eating or lifestyle choices g. diet counseling Although research indicates that wellness programs can have a dramatic effect on employees lives and those of their families, sometimes incentives help encourage employees to pursue healthy choices and maintain commitment to wellness and exercise programs.
