This paper reports a reading promotion project at one of the Apple Tree Libraries in China. Reading promotion activities familiar to U.S. librarians, such as storytelling and booktalking, do not transfer easily to this Chinese school. The project reveals some of the barriers in promoting the reading of English-language juvenile books among Chinese school students. [In affluent areas, English class is offered to elementary school students, too.] When Cathy Hsiao, a Chinese American, visited China, she could not help noticing the fervor for English shown by the government, schools, and parents. A tour of the local bookstore and public library, however, found relatively few publications of English-language children’s literature. Hsiao thought children’s books and audiovisual materials in English would form an important part of a good English learning environment for Chinese children. She went back to the U.S. and established the Apple Tree Library Foundation in November 2002. The Foundation raises funds, purchases English juvenile books, and donates them to public and school libraries in China. Since June 2004, six libraries have received large collections of brand new juvenile books published in the U.S., and more libraries are to follow. The Foundation serves double purposes. Hsiao is convinced that, in addition to providing free books, the Foundation needs to promote innovative youth services and professional management in those libraries, so that the donated collection can indeed reach children, bring them fun, and help with their learning. In year 2005, she announced volunteer opportunities through the mailing list of the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA), encouraging library professionals to mentor Apple Tree Lib
