* * Quantitative Methods For Decision MakersThird Edition Chapter 13 Project management Learning Objectives By the end of this chapter you should be able to: Explain why complex projects require planning and managing Develop a network diagram for a project Incorporate time information into a network diagram and identify the critical path for a project Construct a Gantt chart for a project Incorporate uncertainty into network models Be able to use information on crash times and costs Characteristics of a project Have clearly defined aims and objectives; Have a set completion date; Are often unique, one-off events or at least different from routine activities; Involve a set of related activities which comprise the project; Have resources allocated specifically to them, often in the form of a project budget; Involve a team of people. Project management The project manager is expected to deliver the project: On time Within budget On target (in terms of key aims, objectives or quality standards). Business example Identify the key activities that will make up the project Determine the estimated time each individual activity will take to complete Identify the sequencing of activities in terms of their interdependencies Network diagrams All diagrams must have one start node and one end node Each event must have at least one preceding activity Each event must have at least one subsequent activity Any two events can be joined by only one activity Dummy activity Is not a real activity which forms part of the project but is an artificial activity designed to get us out of this particular difficulty when trying to draw a diagram that conforms to the rules. A dummy activity takes no time and requires no resources It does not actually exist except on paper on the diagram Developing the network diagram Incorporate time information into the network Calculate earliest finish times for each activity Calculate latest finish times for each activity Identify the critical path throug
