Venture Scotland provides enjoyable opportunities for young people to develop self-awareness and appreciation of the outdoors, through weekend courses run at a Bothy based in Glen Etive on the west coast of Scotland. The Bothy is their main residential base and is at the heart of their programme delivery. During a period of 6 months in 2006, over 50 representatives from Venture Scotland’s Community were consulted on their views and vision for the Glen Etive Bothy (by Claire Carpenter - Creating Connections). The results collated here represent their ideas for a 10 year development plan and are represented visually on a large ‘Permaculture map’ (by artist Dave Sutton). This process has been enhanced by the creation of a 1km2 scientific base map with ecological assessment of the Bothy’s surrounds (by ecologist Joe Hope) and a detailed photographic log of all the major and minor features. Participatory consultation and design methods were used with Venture Scotland’s Community – including staff, current and new participants, COPE participants, management committee and volunteers (new and long-term).
