ABSTRACTThisthesisaimstoexplorethesemanticprosodyofsomehighfrequentlyusedwordsinfinancialEnglishandgeneralEnglish,aswellasitsimplicationonpedagogyandlexicalstudy.SemanticprosodywasfirstmentionedbySinclairin1991.Hefoundoutthat?setin‘washabituallyassociatedwithunpleasantevents,andenjoyedcollocatingwithwordswithunpleasantconnotation,suchas?rot,decay,anddecadences‘.Somelinguiststooktheconceptandproposedthatacertainwordhasitsownparticularcollocatingcategorywhichoftenconveysawriter‘sorspeaker‘sevaluatingmeaning,andanycollocatebeyonditmaysoundunnatural.Withthedevelopmentofinternationalfinancialactivities,financialEnglishplaysamoreandmoreimportantrole,especiallyforthosenon-Englishspeakers.ItisimportantforthemtousefinancialEnglishskillfully.AliteratureviewprovidesverylimitedresearchresultsaccountingforfinancialEnglish.TounderstandandconsiderfinancialEnglishfromtheperspectiveofsemanticprosodyhasnotbeenexploreduntilnow.Thus,itistheauthor‘sintentiontoanalyzethesemanticprosodyofsomehighfrequentlyusedwordsinfinancialEnglishandgeneralEnglishtoprovideadifferentandefficientwaytounderstandandusefinancialEnglishforlearners.Thisthesisisconductedbyusingamethodologythatcombinesboththequantitativeapproachandthequalitativeapproach.FirsttheauthorcompliedafinancialEnglishcorpus,throughwhichawordlistwithhighfrequencywasgenerated.Second,4nodewordswerechosenforfurtheranalysisinCorpusofContemporaryAmericanEnglish(COCA).Thesefourwordsarefirm,company,employee,andinterest,amongwhich,firmandcompanywereanalyzedwithinagroup.Thereasonforthisclassificationwasbasednotonlyontheirfrequencybutalsoonthefollowingidea:firmandcompanyarenearsynonyms;employeehassinglesemanticmeaning;interesthasadiversifiedmeaning,soastomaketheanalysisandresultmuchmorecomprehensiveandscientific.Analysisresultsareasfollows:InFinancialEnglishFirmissmallerandmorespecificthancompanywhilecompanyenjoysamuchmorediversifiedsemanticprosodythanfirmanditdisplaysapositivesemanticprosodycomparedwithfirm;Asanounform,Firmhasdifferentsemanticpros
