Free, Prior and Written Informed Consent (FPWIC)? Issues and implementation in the context of PGIS Exercise: “Seasonal calendar” Exercise: “Informing” Exercise: FPWIC documentation * * Informed consent has two components: Disclosure, or making information publicly known, about a proposed activity, including its benefits and risks; Permission, or approval for the proposed activity. Information disclosure is essential for an individual or group to make a decision about whether or not to grant permission. Informed consent is based on the ethical principle that people have a right to know about the risks and benefits before making a decision. * What can we learn from existing examples of informed consent? NOTES TO PRESENTER: Make sure that the trainees have read the “Handout for Trainee” document prior to beginning this presentation. If there is time and interest, you may wish to discuss the common characteristics of the informed consent arrangements in other fields. Why do we need informed consent in PGIS? NOTES TO PRESENTER: You may wish to ask, “What are the benefits and risks of PGIS?” in order to gauge participants’ familiarity with this issue. This discussion should be revisited in more depth with the case study exercises.
