* Pig Health Monitoring Scheme The Pig Health Monitoring Scheme involves visual examination of pig carcases and organs at slaughter for the presence of 11 production-limiting disease conditions, including enzootic pneumonia, pleuropneumonia, pleurisy, mange and ileitis. Participants in five states conduct abattoir inspections, with coverage estimated at 50% of Australia’s pig production. Disease reports that can validate disease management practices are then generated by Pigmon software and sent to producers and their veterinarians. Sponsorship by Pfizer has enabled information from participating states to be collated into a national database, and annual quality assurance exercises will optimise the compatibility of the data. * The National Sentinel Hive Program was established in 2000 to enhance surveillance for exotic bee parasites and bees around seaports. The exotic parasites of primary concern to the Australian apiary industry are the varroa, tropilaelaps and tracheal mites, and the principal exotic bee of concern is the Asian honey bee (Apis cerana), which exists in many countries north of Australia. The port surveillance program provides earlier detection and supplies additional data to support health certification for live bee exports. * Underpinning Australia’s animal health surveillance and monitoring systems is the ability to trace back to the farm of origin. We have had a farm of origin identification for cattle in place since the 1960’s using a tail tag system. We have recently extended that to a national electronic animal identification system. The National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) provides a central database for animal movements and is an electronic ear tag system. It allows cattle, sheep and goats, and pigs to be identified and traced using a range of identification devices, to cope with the complexity of tracing individual animals or flock and herd-based movements.
