Research Tasks Project PRISM 1 IMAGE PROCESSING Background ] The projects under the PRISM ledger are all intended to increase South African surveillance capability in the field one day. The final system, built upon knowledge gained from these projects, will be exposed to harsh operational environments. Some of the aspects pertinent to image processing and related fields in a maritime environment are described below. Threats: All external factors that could threaten a warship. These are the items the surveillance system should detect. ? Boats and Ships: Typically slow moving watercraft restricted to reside near the water surface ? Aircraft: Fast moving targets approaching from high elevations ? Missiles: Extremely fast moving targets ? Terrestrial: People and vehicles, when in the vicinty of land ? Submerged: Submarines and mines Dynamic Background: This includes both the moving ocean and clouds. Also, whitecaps are present on the waves and the varying surface of the sea leads to changes in sun glint reflected off of it. Platform Motion: In operation the cameras that are capturing the data will not be static. It is likely though that the motion will be known (to some degree of accuracy) using Inertial Measurement Units (IMU), Global Position System (GPS) receivers, etc. ? Vibration: The engines in the ship cause vibration which could lead to blurring of images for long exposures. ? Rotation: Even when anchored a ship experiences roll and pitch disturbances due to the waves. Whilst moving the ship will experience yaw and lean angles when turning as well as pitch effects as waves are crested. ? Translation: A moving ship will see the same background objects from different angles and at different distances. Uncontrolled Lighting: The system has to operate in an outside environment. This means that lighting will change. ? 24 Hr Operation: The level of ambient illumination (in the visible spectrum) changes drastically throughout the course of a day, varying from a milli-L
