Researching the Spontaneous Question Central Kitsap Junior High Science Department CCL Steve Trunkey Bonnie Fulton May 2003 Goals The goals of the group are to help students develop lifelong skills to find answers to technical questions. Questions often arise that spark our curiosities and prompt us to seek answers. The Internet is a source that we, as science teachers, use frequently to find these answers. We hope to help students at the junior high level learn the skills that we use on a daily basis. These skills include searching techniques, site evaluation and comprehension, and communication of ideas without plagiarizing the work of the author. The information below works for nearly all of the major search engines. **NOTE: The following features can also be found in a user-friendly format in the “Advanced Search” feature of most search engines. BE SPECIFIC Before learning math, its a helpful reminder that the more specific your search is, the more likely you will find what you want. Dont be afraid to tell a search engine exactly what you are looking for. For example, if you want information about Windows 98 bugs, search for Windows 98 bugs, not Windows. Or even better, search for exactly what the problem is: I cant install a USB device in Windows 98, for example. Youll be surprised at how often this works. USING THE + SYMBOL TO ADD Sometimes, you want to make sure that a search engine finds pages that have all the words you enter, not just some of them. The + symbol lets you do this. For example, imagine you want to find pages that have references to both Egyptian and mummification on the same page. You could search this way: +egyptian +mummif
