Krupitsky Introduction Obesity in the U.S. has become an epidemic Between 1960 and 2002, obesity rates have more than tripled in 20-39 yrs old women, and doubled in 40-59 yrs old women (Flegal et al.) In 1999-2002, rates of obesity in 20-39 yrs old women were 24.9% for whites, 31.2% for Hispanics and 46.6% for blacks (Hedley et al.) Introduction (cont) Weight gain during pregnancy is a major contributor to overweight and obesity for women (Rossner Ohlin) Excessive weight gain during pregnancy and retention of weight 6 months after delivery are predictors of long-term obesity (Rooney Schauberger) Adequate weight gain during pregnancy is important for optimal pregnancy outcomes (Schieve et al.)
