Explicit Teach Focus Lesson – Retelling 2nd Grade Indicator/Objective (2.R.C.10 – The student retells* or role plays important events and main ideas from narrative and expository text. (*focus on retelling) Materials Why Retelling is Important – teacher overhead #1 (attached) Short narrative text with picture cards DAY 1: Introduction/Set - Teacher discusses when he/she retells a real life event such as the following: going to the doctor, getting stopped for speeding, a special event, or experience. Ask students to retell a real life event such as the following: lining up for recess, getting drinks, or taking lunch count. Explicit Teach – Tell students that retelling is an important skill that helps us to become good readers. Share overhead #1 with students. Tell students that sequence is important when we retell. Sequence of the retelling could affect the information shared. Tell students that we usually use order words when we retell. Order words could include first, then, next, finally, second, third, etc. Ask students to think about the words they used when they retold how to line up, get drinks, or take lunch count. Point out that they used order words to help the class have a better understanding of when each event took place. Read or reread a simple narrative text. Model retelling the story using “think aloud”. Use visual cues for support (pictures from text, pictures on cards…). Give groups of students a picture card used in the modeled retelling. Have the class retell the story just modeled by the teacher. Have students work with a partner. Provide partners with a set of picture cards. Partners can alternate retelling the story using the picture cards. Assessment Students will be successful if they can retell the story sequentially using picture cards as prompts. DAY 2: Introduction/Set – Review retelling with students. Discuss what makes retelling easy and what makes it hard. Review what to include and words to use (first, then,
