RING OF FIRE The Ring of Fire is a chain of volcanoes that line the Pacific Rim. The Pacific oceanic plate moves under the Eurasian plate forming mountains and volcanoes. PLATES’ STRESS Along the edges of the tectonic plates, stress builds up until eventually the plates moves suddenly and violently causing earthquakes. JAPAN’S TECTONIC THREAT The islands of Japan were created by plate tectonics. The same internal forces have also challenged the people of Japan. Mt. Fuji, Japan’s tallest peak, is an active volcano that causes threat to Japan. Earthquakes are also common in Japan. There are 1,000 of earthquakes each year in Japan, but the people are not affected by them. Large earthquakes can ruin cities, tear down homes, and kill thousands of people. Japan’s most recent earthquake struck on March 11th and was recorded at about an 9.0 on the Richter scale! TSUNAMIS A tsunami is a giant wave that is caused when an earthquake occurs in the ocean. Tsunamis create great destruction on the coasts of the Pacific Rim.
