The woven textile fabrics used by Day International are some of the most highly engineered in the world. Each layer or ply of fabric used in a blanket may be of different combinations of natural or synthetic materials, with each layer having its own unique physical characteristics. In addition to providing most of the thickness of a printing blanket, the bonded textile construction also provides the offset blanket with its tensile strength and its ability to resist stretch. The compressible layer is the heart of the compressible blanket. It consists of a synthetic elastomer compound of specific physical properties, encapsulating tiny air pockets. The compressible layer: Enables stocks of different thickness to be printed without repacking the blanket. Enables faster press speeds by reducing gap bounce and press gear vibrations. Enables more consistent press speed by eliminating the need to slow the press down and take off impression during a web splice. Absorbent to shock and resists smashes Improves print quality by reducing slur caused by excessive squeeze, giving the printer a wider latitude in packing. Helpful in reducing plate wear. Minimizes mechanical press problems. There are two basic types of compressible layers: 1) closed cell, and 2) open cell. The open cell compressible layer consists of the synthetic elastomer mixed with a dissolvable material, salt being commonly used. The layer is manufactured to the desired thickness, cured, then the salt is removed. This process, called leaching, creates open voids in the synthetic elastomer layer, similar to a sponge. The compressibility, subsequent resilience and durability of the layer are reliant on the physical properties of the synthetic material alone. The closed cell compressible layer consists of the synthetic elastomer with small microspheres, commonly referred to as microcells.
