Bring interests and variety to the practice of pronunciation * Conclusion Some suggestions It is helpful to do articulation practice more than once. The main criteria for good pronunciation are consistency, intelligibility, and communicative efficiency. Do not rely on explanation, but make full use of demonstrations. Try to use visual aids. * Conclusion In the teaching of English as a foreign language, discussions on pronunciation are not so much around how to teach pronunciation as around the value of teaching pronunciation. Some people claim that students do not need to learn pronunciation because pronunciation will take care of itself as the students develop overall language ability. However, there are people who assert that failure in pronunciation is a great hindrance to language learning. What do you think? * Below are some statements about the views and methods of teaching English Pronunciation. Read the statements carefully and decide if you agree or disagree with them. * The role of pronunciation We know that as English majors, our pronunciation should be as good as possible, but to acquire native-like pronunciation is possible or necessary? Frankly speaking, it’s very hard for us, the learners of English as a foreign language, to acquire native-like pronunciation, except those who start learning English at a very young age. The reasons can be the following: 1) CPH: Critical Period Hypothesis states that if humans do not learn a foreign language before a certain age (perhaps around puberty, or the age before 10-12), then due to changes such as maturation of the brain, it becomes impossible to learn the foreign language like a native speaker. No matter this hypothesis is true or not, CPH is very important
