New words and expressions slenderadj.: slim ⑴long and thin: 细长的 a slender rod 一根细长的棍子 slender fingers 纤细的手指 ⑵delicate in build; gracefully slim: 纤细的, 苗条的; 苗条而有风度的: a slender girl 身材苗条的少女 “She was slender as a willow shoot is slender—and equally graceful, equally erect”(Frank Norris) “她象柳枝一样的苗条——一样的优美,一样的挺拔”(弗兰克·诺里斯) ⑶small in amount or extent; 微薄的;数量或范围小的;贫乏的: A slender wage/ income微薄的薪水/收入 a slender chance/hope of survival 渺茫的生存机会 a slender cheque小额支票 slender means小本钱, 小额财产 【比较】Thin is a general word to describe people who have little or no fat on their bodies. If someone is thin in a pleasant way, we say they are slim or slender, but if they are too thin they are skinny, underweight, or (worst of all) emaciated. The opposite of thin in this sense is fat, but it is not very polite. Plump, overweight, chubby (esp. of babies), and matronly (only of older women) are all more polite way of saying the same thing. ?She looks very thin /underweight /emaciated after her illness. 她生病之后很消瘦/颇为瘦削/瘦骨嶙峋。 —The prisoners were emaciated. 囚犯们骨瘦如柴。 confident adj.
