According to the statistics, from 1985 to 2002, more and more school-age children could easily have an opportunity to attend school thanks to the compulsory education programe. Obviously, the government policy has played an important role in assisting poor children and families without privileges. With nine years of free tuition, more families have been able to afford to give their children a chance to acquire knowledge at school. What’s more, some parents that used to be sceptical of the education at school are now aware of the necessity of children attending school, thus leading to a win-win outcome for both children and society. As the chart shows, the number of school-age children attending school increased from 1985 to 2002. In 1985 only 96% of the school-age children received education, while the number increased by 1% to 97% in 1990. Five years later, in 1995, there were 98% of the school-age children going to school. The number reached its peak in 2002 when nearly 100% school-age children attended school. In my opinion, one reason for this change was that the government strengthened the education system in rural areas, thus resulting in more children studying at school rather than working in the field. What’s more, it is certain that our compulsory education played an important role in making for the development of education.
