Realize that everyone comes with a “story” or history of what their past experiences were and how they got to where they are now. This “story” and experiences may greatly influence their readiness to make change CWICs having a clear understanding of the employment continuum will be better able to manage referrals and provide information and supports that are needed for beneficiaries at the right time. * You can’t force change, yet you can facilitate change with well thought-out approaches and many of the counseling techniques we have discussed earlier. There are five main things to keep in mind when supporting individuals through the employment journey. Some individuals may need specific attention and approaches when symptoms of the MI arise as discussed in the following slides. * * Associative Intrusion--Hallucinations, delusions and illogical thinking may with processing new information and communication. Distractibility--Inability to filter and process important information and ignore unimportant details. * Overloading--Information is too complex or too varied to understand in the speed at which it is presented. Stress Reaction--Stressors caused by pursuing or entering employment and managing benefits may increase symptoms and decrease the ability to comprehend. * Inability to generate alternative approaches to stressful situations--Crises and increased stress may cause agitation or irritability—be aware that making change to a new role and managing benefits and working with SSA, a new job, and new routines can be stressful. Ambivalence—some people may need just a travel agent, some a travel guide, some
