Culture Tips Cradle of Chinese Civilization-- Central Plains Central Plains include the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River. They are generally thought as the birthplace of Chinese civilization. Apart from Henan Province, they also include parts of Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei, Shangdong, ect. Even some parts of Beijing, Tianjin, Anhui and Jiangsu are thought as a part of Central Plains. Liuniao(遛鸟) Liuniao（遛鸟）or go for a walk in a quiet place with a bird is a special but common scene we can see in Beijing. Many Chinese keep birds as companions, specifically a type of laughing thrush(画眉) from southern China. But they know that cooped up indoors, birds may become depressed, so they try to brighten their day by meeting other birds. Great Leap Forward(大跃进) The Great Leap Forward was an economic and social campaign by the Communist Party of China (CPC) from 1958 to 1961. The campaign was led by Mao Zedong and aimed to rapidly transform the country from an agrarian(农业的) economy into a communist society through rapid industrialization and collectivization. The campaign caused the Great Chinese Famine(饥荒). Mother River-- the Yellow River The Yellow River is the second-longest river in Asia, following the Yangtze River, and the sixth-longest in the world at the estimated length of 5,464 km (3,395 mi). Originating in the Bayan Har Mountains(巴颜喀拉山) in Qinghai province, it flows through nine provinces, and it empties into the Bohai Sea near the city of Dongying in Shandong province. The Yellow River is called the cradle of Chinese civilization, because its basin was the birthplace of ancient Chinese civilization, and it was the most prosperous region in early Chinese history.
