However, sludge is not only pollutant but a kind of resource. It has always been a spot of the attention which has resulted in the development of a new environmentally friendly technology—The Sludge Pyrolysis Technology. The biochar made from sewage sludge applies to soil as a soil conditioner, which can both supplies organic matter to soil and improves the structure. Heavy metals in sludge are not easy to break down and they are easy to enrich in biochar. They have five forms: Exchangeable、Carbonate-bound、Iron- manganese oxide bound、Organic bound and Residual. It has been proven that once heavy metals enter into soil absorbed by plants or groundwater system, which will lead to dangerous disaster. In order to investigate the security of biochar when it is used as fertilizer, the research in which the heavy metal chromium has been selected has been conducted to study the leaching characters of heavy metals caused by biochar under different conditions. Four chromium-contained sludge: 63 mg·kg-1、100 mg·kg-1、500 mg·kg-1 and 1000 mg·kg-1 have been prepared to get through pyrolyzation under 250~850℃ every 50℃conditions. The research studies the leaching characteristics of heavy metal chromium in the biochar under different pH environment. At pH = 1~2, the leaching concentration and leaching rate of chromium are bigger, and all reach maximum when pH = 1; At pH = 1~2 the leaching concentration and the leaching rate is lower; When pH = 13~14, two leaching curves have a small rise. The more chromium there is in the sludge, the higher eaching concentration is,while the changing trend of leaching rate shows in opposite direction.
