Eclipse was designed to provide a full suite of security applications in one integrated security management system. When we set out to create the Eclipse system, we decided to take the opportunity to do it right and do it the way people always wished they could. Eclipse started on a blank white board. There were no legacy issues and no previous designs to stop us from doing it right. We actually did the research to identify the market requirements for the system before starting development. We took what we had learned from many years of experience in the industry and compared that to what we could learn from other sources, including end users, integrators, government contractors and consultants. We hosted focus groups that included security directors responsible for large enterprise systems, integrators of all sizes and government focused contractors. We conducted usability studies and additional focus groups throughout the process. We evaluated the latest technology offerings in the areas of operating systems, networking, physical security devices, control systems, data management , internet accessibility, data security and PC hardware. We also took into account issues such as government regulations, convergence, interoperability and internationalization as we formalized our plan.
