* * * The Landolt Bornstein New Series is a book series that contains physical and chemical data of over 250,000 substances and material systems. It has a wide scope of coverage as listed here, from nuclear physics to semiconductors to metal alloys to even space science. There are currently 431 volumes in this platform, and this is what it looks like physically for that many books (click + another click to disappear). All the data in these books were SELECTIVELY drawn from over 8000 different peer-reviewed journals, not just from Springer but also from Nature, Science, Elsevier, Wiley, ACS, IEEE, RSC and so on. * SpringerMaterials_Sep2010.pptx * SpringerMaterials_Sep2010.pptx * We don’t limit the scope of our contents to only 4 data resources which you just saw in the previous couple of slides. We always keep acquiring interesting contents. For examples, we recently added a few handbook series on polymers and the nowadays vastly explored areas including nanomaterials. * * * * * * * * * NOW I would like to show you how quickly and precisely I can find specific information on SpringerMaterials. I am sure everyone here either has a car or at least rode on a car before. Do you know all cars created after 1980 are equipped with an oxygen sensor for the sake of better fuel efficiency? Well, one particular material that is used in the sensor is called zirconia, ZrO2. However, since such material changes its structural patterns OR (IE) THE PHASES at different temperatures, and thus cracks once you switch off the car (due to a sharp drop in temperature), an extra element or additive is usually added to stabilize the structures. Yttrium seems to be a wise choice (click), simply because it has a slightly smaller size and also belongs to the transition metal group (blue section). So, what I need to find is the PHASE DIAGRAM of the three elements O, Y and Zr to determine how much Yttrium I need to add to zirconia in order the stabilize its inherent structures. * Showing here
