英语试题
一、阅读理解
A
Is there a dinosaur living in Loch Ness? For years, people have rushed to the deep, cold lake (loch means “lake”) in the Scottish Highlands hoping to see the monster known as Nessie.
The first story about the lake creature dates from the 6th century. According to an ancient text, in the year 565, St. Columba, an Irishman, saved a man from a huge water monster in the River Ness, which flows from the loch. St. Columba ordered, “You will go no further. Do not touch the man; turn back speedily.” The monster was terrified and followed his order.
However, the story wasn’t written down until a century after it supposedly happened. And stories of water monsters were common in those days, when people believed in all kinds of strange things.
After the story with St. Columba, Nessie wasn’t seen or heard from again until the 20th century. In 1934, a photo showed quite clearly a large dinosaur-like animal in the water. However, a man named Christian Spurling admitted shortly before his death that the dinosaur-like animal in the picture was made up by himself. In the end, there exists no evidence that Nessie does or ever did live in the deep, cold Scottish loch.
However, that doesn’t stop many people from believing. One of those is Alastair Boyd. He says he has seen Nessie himself. “I believe in my eyesight ... and I know that the thing I saw was a large animal, something like a whale. It’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen in my life, and if I could afford to spend the rest of my life trying to see it again, I would.”
Boyd’s words may help us understand the role such mysteries play in our culture. People just cannot refuse the lure (诱惑) of monsters and imaginary creatures. Who wouldn’t want to see Nessie rise up from that lake in Scotland? It’s amazing and wonderful to think that fantastic creatures from an unimaginably strange and distant time live in the deepest, darkest places on Earth.
