ii ii Abstract Linguistic vagueness，as an inherent attribute of natural language，plays an important role in human communication. Vague language forms a considerable part of language in communication. It almost exists in all language forms, such as news reports, diplomatic language, commercial negotiations, advertising and so on. So it is very necessary to study vague language. Many foreign scholars started to do research on vague language from 1960s. Many inspiring works have been written. The study of vague language in China developed gradually from 1970s. The scholars have studied vague language specifically from the perspectives of semantics, pragmatics, cognitive linguistics and aesthetics and so on. On the one hand, although many scholars study vague language from the perspective of pragmatics which involves Cooperative Principle, Politeness Principle, Relevance Theory and Adaptation Theory, few people study it from the perspective of principle of goal-direction. On the other hand, the principle of goal-direction was firstly used to analyze institutional discourse and then extended to pragmatic field such as classroom discourse analysis, the comparison between principle of goal-direction and intentionality, doctor-patient interaction，literature works, dialogue in movie and TV series, advertising and so on in recent years. But few people applied the principle to the analysis of vague language in communication. So this thesis studies vague language from the view of the principle of goal-direction which was proposed by Professor Liao Meizhen. As everybody knows, arts are originated from practical life and the conversations in movies reflect the situation of practical life. So the conversations in movies are good language data of life. The movie The Shawshank Redemption which is about a man’s prison life and escaping from the prison has much vague language in conversations.
