Abstract Yeast cells have both t he virtues o bacteria (living in sing le cell, grow ing ast, orming good
locs and suitable o r variou s bioreactors)and ungi (high tolerance to acids, high salt and high concent ration
o substrates).When used in wastewater treatment , the yeast technology permit s a hig h CO D load and a
sm all bioreactor and could endure various bad w astew ater envi ronments such as acid, high osmotic pressures
and so on.I ts residual sludge normally contains high protein and can be u sed as good addit ives in anim al ood.
So this technology is expected to be a promising supplement or t raditional aerobic and anaerobic w astew ater
treatment techniques to solve some int ractable problem s in indust rial pollution.
