How the Life Saver Got Its Hole
* Back in 1912,chocolate maker Charlie
Johnson had a problem. His chocolate didn t
ship well in hot weather, so candy stores
ordered almost none between June and September.
To stay in business, Johnson decided to
develop a summer line:hard candy mints.
Johnsons factory wasnt set up for making
hard candy,so he hired a pill producer for the
job. Most mint candies at the time were
square,and pillow-shaped-and expensive to

porduce. So Johnson ordered his flat and
round,with a hole in the middle,to be
different. *
They look like little life savers,
Johnson said. Suddenly, the mints had a name.
Still,for Johnson the candies were only a
sideline. When New York advertisement salesman
Edward John Tailor tried to persuade him to
advertise the unique mints, Charlie wasnt
interested.
You would make a lot of money! Tailor
said excitedly.
Do you think so? Johnson replied. Then
you buy the brand.For $ 2900, Tailor bought
the brand, and went to work.
