It seems that mosquitoes really do prefer the taste of some people more than others, according to scientists. Male(雄性的) mosquitoes do not bite—it’s the females(雌性) who have a taste for blood, which they need for their eggs. For a proud mosquito mother, not just any blood will do. Scientists have found that 85 percent of our susceptibility(倾向性) to mosquito bites is down to our genes. Certain chemicals in our bodies can also attract mosquitoes. Mosquitoes have even developed a sharp(敏锐的) sense of smell to pick out their favorite blood. Jerry Butler, a scientist from the University of Florida, explains: “ According to Butler’s study, mosquitoes cannot create their own cholesterol(胆固醇) and B vitamins, so they look for people who are rich in those things. Mosquitoes are also attracted to certain acids(酸性物质) produced on the skin during sweating(流汗). As well as this, they can smell carbon dioxide(二氧化碳) in human breath from far away. Larger people often give off more carbon dioxide, which may be why mosquitoes often prefer adults to small children. Pregnant(怀孕的) women are also easily bitten, as their breath contains increased levels of carbon dioxide. So if you are feeling a bit sweaty—or you think you might be genetically designed to be a mosquito’s dinner—then pack some extra repellents(驱蚊剂) when you go out. 2 Some dogs can be really mean.
