Where Do We Go from Here? --Martin Luther King Jr. Guide to Reading The 1960s were turbulent times for the United States. The anti-war movement, the Civil Rights movement, the counter-culture movement, the feminist movement were all unfolding in this period of time. These movements affected Americans as individuals and American society as a whole in various ways and to various degrees. The United States of America was no longer the same after the 1960s. The Civil Rights movement was a major movement which began with the Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka in 1954 and the Montgomery (Alabama) bus boycott of 1955. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968), as a key leader of the movement, played a significant and irreplaceable role. His name is associated with the March on Washington in 1963 and his famous speech “I Have a Dream”, delivered in front of the Lincoln Memorial. He was awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. In the acceptance speech, Dr. King said, “I accept the Nobel Prize for Peace at a moment when 22 millions Negroes of the United States of America are engaged in a creative battle to end the long night of racial injustice. I accept this award on behalf of a civil rights movement which is moving with determination and a majestic scorn for risk and danger to establish a reign of freedom and a rule of justice. ” Dr. King then asked why this prize was awarded to this movement. His answer was, “This award which I receive on behalf of that movement is a profound recognition that nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral question of our time—the need for man to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to violence and oppression… Negroes of the United States, following the people of India, have demonstrated that nonviolence is not sterile passivity, but a powerful moral force which makes for social transformation.” Dr. King was loved and respected by many but was hated by the white supremacists.
