From the number and the scope of speakers and its uses for international communication, English is generally acknowledged to be the most important language in the world. English has long been regarded as an international language (R. Quirk, 1985:3), a world language (E. W. Schneider, 1984:66; D. Crystal, 2001:111), a global language (D. Crystal, 2001:1) and a common language (D. Crystal, 2001:9). Up to now, it has been estimated that nearly a quarter of the worlds population is already quite at home in English, which means roughly about 1.5 billion people. Consider how English has become the international language of communication, both conventional and digital. Think, moreover, of the advances in social life, the development in science and technology, more frequent exchanges among countries and mutual penetration of alien cultures, massive increase in literacy since 1900 and the legacy of the spread of universal education in the late 19th century. The English language is in an unprecedented number of hands. As David Crystal has commented: There has never been a language so widely spread or spoken by so many people as English. There are therefore no precedents to help us see what happens to a language when it achieves genuine world status.
