1 THE MEANING REPRESENTATION OF ANCESTOR STATUE DISPLAY AT SRIBADUGA MUSEUM: A Multimodal Social Semiotic Analysis Suroto Abstract This paper reports the study conducted at Sribaduga Museum to investigate the display of ancestor statue and its relation with meaning representation. By applying Kress’ (2009) framework of multimodal semiotics, a set of statue ’s display is examined by looking at their linguistic, visual, spatial, and audio video designs whose combinations considered building an integral are meaning. The finding proves that the way the statues were displayed is still far from ideal in the sense that the information or meaning contained in the statues cannot be fully captured by the visitors. The linguistic, visual, and spatial designs support the meaning making but the visitor can only get the general understanding about the statue; its shape and name but they can not get the date (acquisition)of the statue. In addition, this general understanding is also caused by limited number of audio video design which in fact can effectively transfer more information in meaning making.
