Thanksgiving What is Thanksgiving? When is Thanksgiving? In the United States of America Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 4th Thursday in November. In Canada thanksgiving is celebrated on the 2nd Monday in October.  It has recently become tradition for many Americans to sit down and watch a football game on thanksgiving (American football that is!) Thanksgiving Origin The pilgrims left England on September 6, 1620 and arrived in America in late November. When they arrived they were unprepared for such a harsh Winter. Because of this many of them died before Spring. However they continued to pray and were assisted by helpful Indians. They managed to reap a great harvest the following Summer. Harvest – A season for gathering grains and fruit As a celebration the pilgrims had a feast lasting three days and celebrated with their Indian friends.
