2009年的夏天,黄尧先生的儿媳妇陈美凌和孙女黄丹蓉通过一位马来西亚朋友的介绍,前来上海美术馆找
我,探询是否有可能在这座他出生并成名的城市里,为他举办一个艺术展览。惭愧的是,由于黄尧先生从上世
纪40年代末转辗南洋,定居马来,与故国几乎没有联系,致使我们对这位中国漫画史、书画史上的前辈大师知
之甚少,除了少量漫画史书中有所提及外,一般民众乃至美术工作者竟不知其为何人。及至观看了黄尧先生的
作品,了解了他的生平,我才深切地感到,这是一位极不应该被淡忘的艺术家,他一生才华横溢,作品极丰,
他是20世纪30年代中国漫画鼎盛时期的一员大将,是抗日救亡运动中的一杆巨笔,是中国书画在南洋传播的
力行者,也是书画家中跳出了两岸政治体制之外、只在中国传统文化中收取并映射光华的一颗沧海遗珠。
In the summer of 2009, Mr. Huang Yao’s daughter-in-law, Chen Mei-ling, and his granddaughter, Huang Dan-
rong, came to the Shanghai Art Museum to meet me, through the recommendation of a Malaysian friend of mine,
asking if I could host an exhibition for Mr. Huang Yao in the very city where he was born and rose to fame. To my
shame, I knew little about this old master in the history of Chinese painting, calligraphy, and cartoons. Since the
1940s, when Huang Yao moved about in Southeast Asia before settling down in Malaysia, he has had little
connection with his motherland, China. Little of his life was known to the general public or even to artists, except
for some passing references in a few books on cartoons. Not until I studied his works and learnt about his life did
I vehemently feel that Huang was a true artist whom we must not leave in the limbo of oblivion. Brilliant and
proliic, he was one of the stars in the 1930s when Chinese cartoons were at its peak. He was also a noted
patriotic artist during the national struggle against Japanese invasion and a major promoter of Chinese painting
and calligraphy in Southeast Asia. Furthermore, as a Chinese artist beyond the political systems of both the
mainland and Taiwan, he seems much like a lost pearl in the sea that was shining so splendidly by de
