Many studies on IS in different fields have significant dif- ferences, although the negative impact of poor IS on individual physical and mental health and so- cial function has been confirmed by a large number of studies. This article offers greater under- standing of IS’s definitions from three perspectives of social cognition, personality and mental health, and compares IS with its similar concepts. Then, we further provide recommendations for improving the conceptualization and measurement of IS, as well as indigenous research in the Chinese context.
