T Teaching Design Birthday Food Birthday Food Around the world S Students: Grade Seven Duration: 40min Type: Reading T: Teacher Ss: Students Teaching philosophy According to the National English curriculum, the ultimate goal of language teaching is to promote Ss’ comprehensive language competence. Therefore, the teaching objectives and tasks should follow the student-centered principle. Also reading is taken as an interactive process among the printed text, the author and the writer. So it’s of crucial importance to activate Ss’ schema. Besides, T should help Ss with the understanding of words, the collection of information and the training of reading strategies. Therefore, the interactive model is adopted, and three stages are followed, namely, pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading. Analysis of teaching material The passage, entitled Birthday Food Around the World is about different birthday food in different countries. Although the topic “food”, as one of the required topics in NEC, is familiar to them, some new words, such as blow out, cut up, get popular, candy, candle may bring difficulties to Ss’ understanding. Thus, guessing based on the context is adopted in this class to reduce the difficulty. Meanwhile, it is an argumentation with a clear structure, as is developed with topic sentences and examples. Thus, Ss can easily get the gist of it under the guidance of the T. Analysis of the learners As Grade 7 students, they have accumulated certain vocabulary and language skills and can express themselves to some degree. Moreover, the topic of this passage birthday food is related to Ss’ lives, which will reduce the difficulty of reading comprehension. Most Ss enjoy discussions and willing to make reports. Thus, oral practicing activities will be designed in post-reading part. However, some of them are too shy to speak in front of the class, so I will encourage them to air their opinions and provide equal chances for each of them. Teaching objectives The
