Mao is popular with readers. The success of the English version is largely attributed to the translators’ triumphant use of translation strategies. As is known to all, domestication and foreignization, working as two main opposite strategies, constitute the bone of contention in our lately translation circle. After a detailed study of the English version of Fortress Besieged and its original version, it is found that foreignization is the key to the success of the translated version. In this thesis, the English version of the novel Fortress Besieged is studied to investigate the application of the domestication and foreignization.
