A A Study on Ku Hungming as a Translator AThesis SubmiRed to Foreign Studies College Of Hunan Normal University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For The Degree of Master ofArts in the Subject of English Language and Literature By Ouyang Fangli Under the Supervision of Professor Huang Zhending Changsha，Hunan May’201 1 AbstractKu Abstract Ku Hungming is a scholar,a social activist and a translator who is influential both at home and abroad in modern China．By his articles and translations，Ku makes great contribution to the cause of Chinese translation and the spreading of Chinese culture in the western world． For a long time，Ku Hungming is studied by most scholars and researchers as a social activist，a philosopher,or a scholar,while with his translations and translating activities remaining a mystery for many readers．However,Ku’S contribution to the spreading of Chinese culture in the western world deserves further and detailed study．Since 1 980s， more and more researchers have studied Ku as a translator．Regrettably, most of their researches have studied Ku as a translator from micro perspectives，without systematic study of Ku’S translation views and translation activities．With the intension to confirm Ku’s contribution to the history of Chinese translation practice and theory,this paper probes into Ku’S translation views and factors influencing the formation of his views from a macro perspective． This paper is a try of the comprehensive study of Ku as a translator, SO it is necessary to have a review of Ku’S experience and his major translating activities and translations first．Based on this，the paper presents and analyzes external and internal factors which have great influence on the formation of Ku’S translation views，and then concludes that that Ku’S translation views are correct and effective guidance under the special social and cultural context of his time．The paper summarizes and analyzes Ku’S fragmentary translation views in five aspects，namely：
