Butanol and quartz sand were used as the hardly volatile combustible liquid and the porous bed ，respectively. The results show that the height of liquid suface and the diameter of quartz sand have a significant effect on the stucture of spread flames ，flame spread velocity and the temperature distribution of sand layers. In front of the leading edge of the flame there is a gasified combustible ejected region (about 5.6 mm)on the surface of the quartz sand ，which has an important effect on the spread of flame.
