* * Darves B. Strategic searching. Med Net 2004;10(5):1-4. Feldman S. Enterprise Search Technology: Information Disasters and the High Cost of Not Finding Information. Portals Mag 2004:27-28. * * * * Often literature databases are differentiated into several types: the results of original research is processed and published in articles in journals, reports and beeks. That is called: primary literature; the contents of journals is compiled and published in indexes, like Index Medicus (Medline, PubMed), Index to Psychological Literature (PsycINFO), Science Citation Index (Web-of-Science), PiCarta. Excerpta Medica (EMbase) is not available for Erasmus MC; it is too expensive. Several publishers have their own indexes or make their sites searchable to find for scientific information: Scopus (Elsevier), Google Scolar, Science Direct. There is a third type of literature; I think also primary literature, because the orginal research consists of analysing other articles and making combinations of the results found: reviews, sytematic reviews and meta-analyses: Evidence Based Medecine like Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, UpToDate. * * Now we restrict to the searching process itself. We can discriminate between several types of search strategies: You can search for words, just in the text of the records (see a record as a card in a card box: you search in te text written on the card). Beside that, on the card there often is a field with specific information: the keywords. Often those keywords are standardized keywords according to a thesaurus-system. In Medline this is the Medical Subject Heading system. Using that system for searching is called: subject searching. PubMed tries to combine both types of searching automatically if you type free-text words. Beside that you can limit your searches to specific attributes, or you can search information by clicking words in alphabetic lists of available words (indexes). You can combine several searches of all types by using
